More Goodreads. I just went and checked and Goodreads does have an event section. It seems to only limit to Australia for us and then sortable bu event type and date.

Thing 7. Goodreads Vs Librarything.
I had a look at these two sites and some reviews when deciding which to use. Reviews seemed pretty even. I think for some it was just a matter of which you tried first.
I did like Librarything's Your Local tab for venues and events. Some of the venues are quite out of date though, the events are interesting, nearly all from The Wheeler Centre, but good for some of those others you would not otherwise see - e.g. a booklaunch at an indian restaurant.
Despite that I went with Goodreads and am happy with them. I had a bit of trouble working out how to do a rotating bookshelf display but there are groups that help with questions like that and in the end it was quite easy.
Because people were asking me about what I'd read and I couldn't always remember, (suprise!), I was keeping a journal but it was filling fast and you had to have it with you. Since starting with Goodreads I can log on and check (handy if i am on desk).
I get email alerts re blogs from authors I'm interested in and from the groups i've joined. It gives recommendations based on your books and has various quizzes, trivia. I haven't won any ARC's yet though. I've also linked my goodreads to my facebook and twitter.http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/5689321-marie
Thing 6. Pinterest.
Right - now this should have come with a warning. IT IS ADDICTIVE!
Even for non-aspiring chefs and brides to be - IT IS ADDICTIVE!

As you may have gathered, I love it, but it eats the hours up. IT IS ADDICTIVE!

http://pinterest.com/marielinton17/boards/

These are funny because they're TRUE.

You can create private folders (up to 3) which can't be seen publicly. You can allow sharing rights to allow someone to pin to one of your folders. You can follow pinners or individual boards. Or browse subject headings. You can also just 'like' pins which adds them to a list but not a board. You end up doing a bit of editing when boards get two big or you want to break down.add catagogies. It would be good it they let you do sub-boards. The pin below was also true but Pinterest has recently made a few changes, one of which is now it alerts to the fact you have already pinned an image to a board. Handy.
Thing 5. Flickr. I've had a flickr account since 2007 but admit I use it very spasmodically. I have more family shots on the private setting so you won't see them :)
I read that Tumbler and instragram have made severe inroads into it's popularity.

I'm in two minds about Tumbler, there's some great stuff on it but be careful with the kids, there's also porn as i found out.
I also have just tried Instagram. Kim had sent me some family photos she edited with that. It's amazingly easy to get some great results using the app. It's fun to play with and I'm sure I would once I have a smart phone.
RSS. I've created a googlereader account and subscribed to earlyword and mashable.
More on Twitter. I just don't get it. I'm just not interested in most of what's on it. I have feeds but I rarely check them. I don't obsessivley check my phone. The ones I am more interested in I RSS or get email. But it is good for a laugh!

Twitter

Ok, so now i've added my tweets to by blog. tick.
Yammer
I have been on council's yammer for a long time but have never used it because my library collegues weren't. In general, the posts i would see were ususally either duplicates of things that appeared on the kelvinator or email, or they were too specific to the units using it.
Now that there is a library group i think it will be much more useful and attractive to use.

Back Again!

Social media part 2, only five years later! I impressed myself by remembering my password (on the third attempt). Rather than amuse you with my musings here are some great metal bookends available from http://www.artoridesign.com/
Blogger has changed in theat time so I am also going to have to brush up on post settings.

And on the basis that you can never have enough cat pictures......

#13 De.icio.us

Signed up in del.icio.us (and I so empathise with Jill getting sick of typing it). Reminds me of Furl from a few years ago. I liked the idea but as I was only using once computer it wasn’t worth it. I now can be using multiple computers and I hve found occasions when not having bookmarks transferred was quite frustrating so this sounds good.
Of course things never run smoothly. I could join no probs apart formthe fact that i'm trying to minimise my passwords and some other bugger already has them), but can’t add to my toolbar as council don’t allow it. Ok I’ll add to my home one if I ever get internet access. Keep going. Imported my bookmarks, again no problems. I didn't realise just how many i had.
It doesn’t look how I thought. Needs a bit of playing to get the hang of it but I don’t have time now.
It is just me or is it weird that the page orders go in reverse order?
I will come back to it.

#10 Image generator

I did some others which i've loaded to my Flickr account
This is my little ray of sunshine, Squiffy

The Karma of Literature

I released another book into the wild on the weekend. Lots of decisions around selecting ‘the chosen one’. Will someone enjoy this? Where is the best place to release? Which booktag will I use, general, genre, vacation etc?
Read and release. I would love to catch one one day but I think to do that I need to check the recently released lists more frequently. Parliament Station, platform 3, about an hour ago, 5 books - maybe one will still be there. A lot of people seem to favour cafes or in trees in parks (suitably protected).
Bookcrossings.

#14 Technorati

Technorati is more attractive to look at than Feedster. The same search terms seemed to come up with less sites selling things but not any more interesting/relevant (to me at least). Once you’re more familiar with the sites it may be better but I’m not convinced enough to spend the time.
Topix looks interesting but our council intranet has as ABC News top story live feed which is easy and convenient to use. I would probably go straight to the websites of CNN or BBC etc. I also added one of the newsfeeds to my bloglines and to be honest I think the forums are a waste of time.
I did find one blog with a ‘makeuseofblog’ feed which was quick and simple and worked easily unlike some to the others I tried although I gather now (after swearing and giving up) that at least some of the problems were to do with our version of IE readers Netscape??

#7 Using technology

I did do these in order but didn't post them. I liked the http://www.blyberg.net/card-generator/ which one of my colleagues put on her blog. I am forwarding it to my sister-in-law who would use it in her crafting.
http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/ is great! I've watead a lot of time here. I already knew the Dilbert ones but it has tons of interesting ones which I will have to try at some stage like Celtic cross-stitch generator, the EMO Haiku generator was a kak, my brother is certainly getting some of those.
And it's a bit old hat but yes- I really do like e-cards and use them, although it’s disappointing when the recipients don’t have sound cards or are otherwise blocked form receiving the full benefit. Tip” they’re great for doing ahead and setting delivery times so it doesn’t matter if you forget. I know it’s fairly low-tech but I like it.

#11 LibraryThing

I have looked at LibraryThing before and thought I couldn’t be bothered putting all my books on. What I own is not a true indicator of what I read anyway. I do like the ability to have covers but then a lot of what I have doesn’t have covers. It would be good for collections or if I was contacting other collectors. It can be interesting looking at the libraries of others who have the same books but there are also other places to see that.

#9 finding feeds & Library related Blogs

Do I have time to search for the gold amongst the dross? In FeedsterI seem to keep finding the majority of sites are trying to sell things and most of the rest boring, often out of date or rubbish, I’d rather be in Second Life and I don’t have time for that. I already subscibe to unshelved and librarybytes. I might look at adding feeds from some more in that mythical 'when i get time'.

#8 RSS feeds and Bloglines

I already have some, what I now know as RSS feed alerts, set up from sites such as Bowkers Books in Print and Library journal and find having them go straight into a folder in my outlook is probably more convenient than logging into Bloglines. I’ve set up 14 feeds and the interesting part will be how often I actually check them. Blogs feeds might be useful though to save me going to check the very few that I am actually interested in.
Again it makes it harder that I am not in an office with colleagues to ask (although I do share an office with one I end up doing this after hours).
Library is a difficult search term though as everyone has their photo library, their book library, their document library etc and narrowing the terms down seems to be a bit hit and miss depending on how people have tagged them.

I found mashups a more frustrating exercise. I think I need to be doing it with someone else & help share ideas. I've also decided I need to build up a bigger photo base too, you're going to get sick of my nephews and cat.
